Stone setting is a wonderful technique for jewellers to learn that enables you to add colourful semi-precious or even precious gemstones to your metalwork.

Our experienced tutor Hayley Kruger, will guide you through how to make three key settings from start to finish:

1. Collet Setting: create your own bespoke setting for a stone and learn how to incorporate it into a ring/pendant and more.

2. Crown Setting: once you've made a collet setting you can adapt it to make a crown setting.

3. Channel Setting: learn how to make a basic channel setting with a line of beautiful gemstones

This course is suitable for jewellers who have some experience of making silver jewellery and of basic stone setting. if you are new to silversmithing we would recommend taking the 'Silver Jewellery Workshop' and ideally the 'Soldering Masterclass' first, in order to make the most of this course. And if you are new to stone setting we recommend taking the 'Stone Setting in Silver' course before this bundle.

Hayley Kruger
Hayley Kruger is a jewellery designer and jewellery industry professional who has worked in many aspects of the trade since 2002. With a BA Honours in Jewellery and Silversmithing, Hayley went onto work as a designer for many of the UK's most recognisable retailers such as Top Shop, Marks & Spencer, River Island, Next, Lola Rose, Orelia, Morgan and many more.
She taught for many years at the London Jewellery School and has been a mentor for the Jewellers Academy Diploma courses since the beginning, currently mentoring on the Advanced Jewellery Diploma.


Hayley was invited to show her work at the Victoria and Albert Museum, has been published in Vogue, Stylist and Marie Claire to name a few. And she was invited to be an ambassador for Triumph Lingerie's Women in Making campaigns 2013 and 2014.


Using the experience she gained, Hayley now works from her studio in Cirencester on private commissions including engagement rings and shares her knowledge on various aspects of the jewellery industry.

Collet Project

  • 17 degree Collet block/former and punch
  • Stone setting burr (used an 8mm burr in this project for an 8mm stone)

Channel Project

  • Bearing burr (note: bearing burr should be 1.5 or 2mm. They shouldn't be big enough to touch or damage the opposite side of the setting)
  • Disc cutter burr

Project 1: Basic collet

  • Fine silver sheet - 0.5mm or 0.7mm
  • Doubled sided tape/glue/spray mount
  • Hard solder
  • 8mm round gemstone

Project 2: Crown setting

  • Fine silver sheet - 0.5mm or 0.7mm
  • Doubled sided tape/glue/spray mount
  • Hard solder

Channel Setting

  • 2 x 4mm square stones
  • Sterling silver sheet - 1mm thick
  • Hard solder and easy solder
